Summary:
This lecture will draw on findings from the South African Study of Stress and Health – the first nationally representative study of the levels and correlates of mental disorders and patterns of mental health service utilization. It will situate the South Africa findings within the context of the WHO's World Mental Health Initiative. Topics covered will include:
• Lifetime and 12-month estimates of the prevalence of mental disorders
• Levels of treatment and unmet mental health needs
• Exposure to Trauma in South Africa
• The association between early childhood adversity and adult mental health
• Levels of self-reported discrimination in South Africa and their association with mental health
• How disabling mental disorders are compared to physical health problems
