About the course:

The Short Course in Mental Health Nursing for Registered Nurses consists of three modules, namely Module 1 (Psychiatric Nursing Methods and Skills), Module 2 (Psychopathology) and Module 3 (Legal-Ethical and Theoretical Aspects of Mental Health Nursing).
Note that these modules do not need to be completed in any specific order.
Upon successful completion of all three modules, learners will receive a certificate of completion for the Short Course in Mental Health Nursing for Registered Nurses.

CPD:

Once SANC has ratified its CPD guidelines and opened applications, Vista Academy will apply to have the modules accredited for CPD points.

 


Module 1: Psychiatric Nursing Methods and Skills

Dates: 12 - 16 August 2019
Time: 07:00 – 16:00

About this module:

In this module the one-to-one therapeutic relationship with the mental health care user, supportive interviews, mental health education and therapeutic groups will be explored as professional resources mobilised by the mental health nurse in order to facilitate the promotion of mental health. These resources are psychiatric nursing methods that require certain skills and knowledge.

2. The therapeutic relationship:
a. Definition of a therapeutic relationship
b. Characteristics of a therapeutic relationship
c. Phases of a therapeutic relationship/supportive interview
d. Problem-solving process
e. Barriers to a therapeutic relationship
f. Conducting a therapeutic interview (practical component)

3.  Facilitative communication:
a. Therapeutic attitudes
b. Non-verbal facilitative communication skills
c. Verbal facilitative communication skills

4.  Crisis intervention:
a. Definition of concepts
b. Characteristics of a crisis
c. Risk factors for crisis development
d. Phases in crisis intervention

5.  Therapeutic groups:
a. Definition of therapeutic groups
b. Types of therapeutic groups
c. Therapeutic factors of groups
d. Group dynamics
e. Group roles
f. Group stages
g. Role of the therapist in creating and maintaining therapeutic groups
h. Obstacles in therapeutic groups
i. Facilitation of a group (practical component)

6.  Mental health education:
a. Assessment
b. Planning
c. Implementation
d. Evaluation
e. Designing a visual aid for mental health education (practical component)

About this module:

In this module, various aspects related to nursing and psychopathology will be covered. Diagnosis and classification of psychiatric disorders will be discussed, along with the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis and formulation/implementation of a nursing plan).

A number of psychiatric conditions will also be explored, such as mood disorders and suicide, anxiety disorders, cognitive disorders, and personality disorders, in order to facilitate the promotion of mental health.
